While Harleys tend to be out of reach in Japan, here in Miami, they are surprisingly priced the same as, or even cheaper than Japanese bikes like Honda and Kawasaki. Its modern bobber style is also refined, possessing a beauty that seamlessly blends into the palm tree-lined landscapes of South Florida.

However, the theme of this trip was 'an overwhelming sense of the extraordinary.' Furthermore, in the Miami rental market, Japanese bikes are treated as imports and were slightly more expensive than Harleys (about $540 for 3 days), so I decided to pass this time. That said, for riders who 'absolutely want to avoid machine trouble on a trip' or 'want to surrender to the latest equipment and focus on the scenery,' it is a superb machine that I can recommend with confidence.

Departure! Escaping Miami's Traffic to the Breathtaking Ocean Route

After completing the rental procedures and suppressing my pounding heart, it was time to head from Miami to Key West! Shortly after setting off, I was baptized by a massive traffic jam that exceeded my expectations from downtown Miami through Florida City. June in Florida is unforgivingly hot and humid. The radiant heat from the scorching asphalt and the hot air rising from the V-twin engine between my legs slowly sapped my stamina. Gulping down cold water and taking frequent breaks, I just kept heading south.

However, the moment I passed through Florida City and leaped onto US-1 (the Overseas Highway), the world dramatically changed colors. A crystal-clear emerald green ocean spread out to the left and right of my vision. A deep blue sky, as if paint had been dissolved into it, and floating white clouds colored the single road that stretched endlessly. The sensation of gliding over the ocean with the heavy bass of the Harley, while catching the wind full of the scent of the tide with my whole body. It was exactly the 'overwhelming freedom' we had been searching for.

What gave me goosebumps the most was the 'Seven Mile Bridge' that appears around Mile Marker 47. When racing across this bridge, which literally stretches in a straight line over the ocean for 7 miles (about 11 kilometers), you almost get the illusion that the bike is flying through the sky. While gripping the tank tightly with my knees to withstand the intense crosswinds, I was left breathless by the 360-degree grand panorama with absolutely nothing obstructing the view. After tossing my luggage at the hotel and changing into sneakers, it was time to hit the streets of Key West! During the day, it's a fiercely contested area with long lines of tourists from all over the world, but if you aim for dusk or early morning, you can capture the perfect shot surprisingly smoothly. Standing in front of this southernmost monument, listening only to the sound of the crashing waves, my chest grew hot with the sense of accomplishment of having crossed countless bridges. Originally brought in for cockfighting and later going feral, they are now beloved residents symbolizing the free-spirited atmosphere of this town. It felt like I was finally able to touch the true magic of Key West only after getting off the bike seat and breathing in the air of this town deeply with my own two feet.

To wrap up a day in Key West, you cannot miss watching the sunset at Mallory Square. The setting sun melting into the Gulf of Mexico is praised as 'the most beautiful in the world.' As the sun dips lower, the sky and sea dramatically change expressions by the minute, from fiery orange to pale pink, and then to a mysterious deep purple. The silhouette of a yacht gliding across the mirror-like surface of the sea, standing out sharply against the sunset sky. It was a breathtakingly spectacular view that left me speechless.

Holding the lingering memory of the beautiful sunset in my heart, I headed for dinner at the 'Half Shell Raw Bar', nestled in the historic port area. This is a super popular spot where you can taste exceptionally fresh seafood at bargain prices, spiced up by the sound of the waves and the night view of the marina. The rustic interior, exuding a vibe from well-used old wood, is overflowing with the energy of locals and tourists tilting their mugs, filled with the ultimate 'this is a port town tavern!' vibes.

My target was the happy hour, limited to 16:30-18:30 daily. Sliding in just in time, I ordered raw oysters freshly caught in the Gulf of Mexico at an unbelievable bargain price of $2.00 each! Squeezing fresh lemon tightly, topping it with spicy cocktail sauce, and slurping it down in one bite. The moment the rich umami and sweetness of the ocean burst in my mouth, I immediately washed it down with an ice-cold local beer. Phew! Day 2: Nature Hiking and Wildlife Encounters in Marathon

The morning of the second day. Reluctantly bidding farewell to Key West, I headed north towards Miami. However, just returning via the highway would be a waste! So, I turned off the bike's engine at the halfway point, Marathon (in the Middle Keys area), and incorporated ecotourism to dive into Florida's great nature. My destination was the 'Crane Point Hammock', a nature reserve of an incredible scale covering 63 acres.

Stepping onto the trail that weaves through the dense tropical hardwood hammock, the air completely changed, transporting me to another world as if I were exploring a jungle. While walking through the sunbeams filtering through the trees, suddenly, with a rustling sound, a giant wild iguana easily exceeding 1 meter in length crossed right in front of me! I couldn't help but let out a 'Whoa!' Basking defenselessly in the strong sunlight, they look just like little dinosaurs. You can observe their impressive figures from a distance where you can almost hear them breathing.

Furthermore, the premises also house the 'Marathon Wild Bird Center,' which protects injured birds. Here, pelicans, falcons, and the symbol of America, the Bald Eagle, are receiving treatment, and you can see their proud and powerful figures up close. Getting off the roaring bike and hiking enveloped in overwhelming silence and the breath of the wild. This experience, where motion and stillness intersect, added wonderful depth to the memories of the touring trip.

After working up a pleasant sweat from the jungle hike, it was finally time for the oasis of the second night, the 'Islander Resort' in Islamorada. A complete turnaround from the classic, hideaway-like hotel of the first night, what appeared before my eyes was a tropical resort of overwhelming scale boasting a vast 24-acre property! Fully renovated in 2025, the facilities are sparkling clean everywhere, and the moment the swaying palm trees and pure white cottage-style guest rooms welcomed me, my mood was instantly elevated to a celebrity level.

Right in front of the resort is an emerald green ocean that looks like dissolved paint, and a private beach that stretches endlessly. Sinking deeply into a deck chair at the water's edge and just listening to the sound of the waves, the hustle and bustle of daily life melts away like a lie. Furthermore, it is fully equipped with two giant pools (saltwater and freshwater), trendy pickleball courts, and even a full-fledged 9-hole putting golf course. It is so fulfilling that you can complete a superb vacation right here without ever stepping outside.

Dinner on the second night after fully enjoying the resort. Actually, I had initially targeted the super famous restaurant 'Lorelei Restaurant & Cabana Bar,' renowned for its sunsets and live band performances. However, despite marching in enthusiastically, it was so thriving that there was an unexpected 1-hour wait! With no option to wait for me, having emptied my stomach to the limit from touring and hiking, I hastily tapped my smartphone and changed course to the nearby 'Islamorada Shrimp Shack'.

However, this intuitive change of plans turned out to be a massive, massive success! Opening the door of the unpretentious, homey local diner, I ordered their famous shrimp dishes without hesitation. What was brought to the table was a dream-like, hearty plate topped with giant golden fried shrimp, coconut shrimp with an irresistible sweet aroma, and a mountain of homemade coleslaw. One bite, and the plump, meaty umami of the shrimp exploded from inside the crispy batter! Slathering them generously with three types of special dip sauces, I simply couldn't stop my hands.

The glamour of famous restaurants featured in guidebooks is wonderful, but frantically stuffing your cheeks with unadorned, exquisite seafood at a diner frequented by locals like this. This is exactly the true thrill of an unplanned journey. The ultimate junk and delicious meal, and an ice-cold beer.
