From the Best Seat on a Day Off to the Unknown Depths: Subnautica 2 Play Diary

Coming Back to the Deep Sea with a Great Value Bundle!

It's been a few years since I was completely hooked on the first game. Hearing that the long-awaited sequel was out, I eagerly opened Steam on my morning off.

To my surprise, a bundle with the unplayed spin-off 'Below Zero' was on sale! Encountering such unexpected luck really boosts your mood on a day off, doesn't it?

It's amazing to be able to leisurely enjoy a past title I hadn't touched while patiently waiting for updates to the new game. Once I brew some hot coffee, I'll dive right into the deep sea!

A Breathtakingly Clear Blue World

Now, into the new ocean! The moment I dove in with a splash, a 'Wow...' escaped my lips. The water is just so clear and breathtakingly beautiful.

Swimming in the shallows, the sunlight reflecting on the water's surface shimmers, making it feel like snorkeling at a tropical resort. The ocean in the previous game was lovely too, but the way the light filters through and the transparency of the water have evolved beyond comparison.

However, this is still an unknown planet. Despite its beauty, there's an underlying, unfathomable eeriness... I heard multiplayer is available this time, so I hope to invite some friends and share this view someday.

Too Comfortable! New Tools and Home Building

What surprised me when playing was the incredible comfort of survival life. A ton of convenient new tools have been added, allowing for stress-free exploration.

What got me most excited was the base-building system! Unlike the previous game where you just connected fixed parts, you can now bend corridors, expand rooms, and create the secret base exactly as you envisioned. Building a glass-walled, cafe-style room with a panoramic view of the ocean and just gazing outside has become my recent healing time.

Tedious material organization has also been automated, freeing me from the hassle of tidying up. I've completely entered architect mode, putting survival on the back burner.

Unexpected Superhumanization!? The Surprise of Biomods

In the previous game, I swam around nervously as a vulnerable 'flesh-and-blood human.' But this time, something called 'Biomods' has appeared, allowing you to enhance your own body!

By incorporating the genes of local creatures, you can filter seawater into drinking water or dash away from enemies at top speed. At first, I was bewildered, thinking, 'Wait, I'm evolving myself!?' but once I started using them, their convenience became indispensable.

It's the sensation of adapting to this harsh planet yourself, rather than just relying on tools. It makes me feel like a bit of a superhuman, which is really exciting.

Early Access Volume and the Sense of Fear

It's currently an Early Access version still in development. It seems to have about 30% of the total volume, and as I swam around engrossed, I finished playing up to the current story break in about 12 hours.

It went by in a flash, but I'm highly satisfied with the expected fun. However, the 'unfathomable fear of the ocean' and 'sense of isolation' from the first game might be a bit subdued. The AI talks to you often, and the BGM warns you of approaching danger, giving a strange sense of security.

As a horror fan, I feel a tiny bit sad about it, but being able to relax and immerse myself in exploration and building is a welcome change.

Patiently Waiting for Completion

Subnautica 2 will steadily head towards completion over the next few years. Leisurely waiting for new ocean areas and stories to be added is one of the true joys unique to Early Access.

Just looking at the title screen, I can't stop feeling excited about what adventures await. For now, until the next update arrives, I plan to take a detour to the icy seas of 'Below Zero,' which I bought together with it.

With hot coffee as my companion, I want to slowly watch over the gradually expanding deep-sea world at my own pace.

Conclusion: Deep-Sea Exploration Where Even the Waiting Time is Precious

With its overwhelming visual beauty and a comfortable system that plays smoothly, Subnautica 2 completely melted away my holiday time. It's still an unfinished ocean, but I plan to continue my relaxing and carefree survival life while looking forward to future updates.
